Retired Kindergarten teacher here. I witnessed the whole language nonsense, the later insertion of additional phonics programs so that 5 year olds had no time to learn through play. I gave old-fashioned homework sheets, against the advice of my administrators, to help children learn sight words and phonics. I tried to juggle it all and still teach math and science, keep block play, painting and constructive learning in my classrooms. I was told that I “sing too much” and “teach too much science.” Retired in 2016, taking a reduced retirement, when I could no longer teach their way.
